The Tiks aizliegts. Baltijas grāmata 1918–1940 (To Be Banned. Baltic Books 1918-1940) travelling exhibition is open in the exhibition hall of the National Library of Latvia (Level 1). It will be open until 24 March 2019. Entrance is free.
This is not an exhibition of books that were banned in the Soviet era. The title metaphorically refers to the 50-year period of prohibition, testimonies of which are reflected in books that, quietly and unadvertised, continued to live on in home libraries and told readers about a past, treasure-filled world.
The period from 1918 to 1940 is known as the golden era of Baltic publishing. Many things happened for the first time: statehood had presented an opportunity for undisturbed development, full-cycle education was finally available in national languages, sector researchers had gained the chance to publish articles at higher education institutions and research institutes, reading enabled both knowledge and full-fledged entertainment to be obtained by rural and city dwellers. Members of all social strata read and enlightened their intelligence, authors could exercise their creativity diversely and freely, the state became involved in the promotion of books and support for publishing. Both print runs and book design reached unprecedented heights.
This classic book exhibition offers a look at what was available in the three Baltic States during the 1920-30s, highlighting the innovation of the period's publications, the link with the traditions of national publishing, and contemporary trends in global publishing.
The exhibition has been organised by the national libraries of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in cooperation with the Universities of Vilnius and Tallinn. From 9 March to 14 May, the exhibition was on display at the National Library of Lithuania, and from 31 July to 25 October at the National Library of Estonia.
The Tiks aizliegts. Baltijas grāmata 1918–1940 (To Be Banned. Baltic Books 1918-1940) exhibition was developed as part of Latvia's centenary programme.
